Independent Members

Four Members of the House Purple sit for no party at all. They take no whip, answer to their constituents alone and can usually be relied upon to ask the question nobody else will.

Independents have a special problem under the Constitution. Article 61 fills a vacant seat with the next name on the departing Member’s party list. An independent has no party and no list, so if one leaves the House, the seat stays empty until the next general election. Independent Members are, as a result, the only ones whose seats die with their careers, and they tend to hang on to them.

Gemma Lett MHP

Independent · Narrowside

Gemma Lett was once tipped as one of the brightest talents in Dinglese politics. She now sits as an independent and campaigns on a range of issues, including vaccine safety and the health effects of mobile networks, positions that have made her one of the most argued-with Members of the House.

She has a gift for finding the question everyone else has forgotten to ask, and the Bean Counter has learned never to assume which kind of question it will be.

  • Constituency: Narrowside
  • Interests: Monetary policy, vaccines, telecoms

Profiles of the other three independent Members are being updated following the general election of 3 May 2029.
